Search Me
By: Pastor Melissa
Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart.
Examine me, and know my anxious thoughts,
and see if there be any offensive way within me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139, starts and ends with the same words “search” and “know”. In the first few verses David declares that it is you, LORD, that knows me, and he finishes because You know me search me and make it known to me.
Do you know that the LORD knows you? He knows your innermost thoughts (v2). He knows all your ways (v3), He also knows when you are at your best and at your worst (v8), because He is God. The all knowing, all powerful, all loving, God, knows you.
I have read recently that the closer we walk with Jesus the more utterly depraved we recognize our lives to be without Him. I pondered on that thought. The closer we walk, the more exposed we become. And then it dawned, “search me, O God and know my heart”. I know He knows, so it is not God that needs to see the offense within me, it's me! The closer I walk with Jesus the more I seek out His righteousness, His ways, His illuminating path. In doing so, I ask these questions more often “God is this Your will or mine? Am I responding by my flesh or Your Spirit? Help me, Father, live like Your Son and lead me. Empower and expose me by Your Spirit and through Your Word to do Your will”.
“Search me” are powerful words that can bring light to the dark spots in our lives. Revealing comes through various ways, often the Word, maybe your spouse or loved one, sometimes a great friend willing to make a bold statement in truth and in love. Will you listen and see the exposed blind spots that need to be reconciled? Will you let God lead you into the “the way everlasting” by making known the sin and offenses we harbor deep down inside but manifest themselves outward to those around us?
Meditate slowly through each phrase of Psalm 139:23-24 and pause to reflect as you do: “Search me, O God and know my heart. Examine me, and know my anxious thoughts, and see if there be any offensive way within me and lead me in the way everlasting”.
