Meek Doesn’t Mean Weak
By: Pastor Amie
One result of an upside-down culture is the way we interpret Jesus’ words. Take Meek for example. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus makes this claim: “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5 NIV)
Often, we associate traits of the meek with being a doormat, a push over, even weak. What if I told you that is backwards thinking? That to be meek doesn’t mean you are weak but reveals strength. What Jesus is saying here is humility holds great power!
The NLT version translates this passage this way: “God blesses those who are humble…”
I’ve heard it said, “humility (meekness) is strength under control rather than strength seeking control.” Meek people desire to serve, not be served. Meek people reach for a towel when other’s reach for a crown. Meek people go low when others strive to be above. Meek people go last in a world desperate to be first and strive to make Jesus’ name known, not their own.
This week give up your seat. Lift someone else, over elevating yourself. Be a person about people.
To best live out the brave life, we must exhaust humility.
