Glory Revealed
By: Melissa Beauvais
“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.” (1 Peter 4:12-13).
Simon the man that is said to have been compelled “to carry his [Jesus’] cross” (Matthew 27:32). Was the literal and metaphorical picture of what it meant to carry the cross Jesus bore. Simon took this wooden beam and walked next to the man that would be nailed to it. He felt the splintering wood, the heaviness, the humiliation, the shame, that comes with carrying your own death. Simon’s life and bravery is forever read and remembered.
We all have crosses that we bear. No one is without one. Peter says it is this cross that we get to share in the sufferings with Jesus and that causes us to rejoice (v13). The crosses we bear are more than circumstances, people, sickness, or hardships. We do not choose our cross, we cannot make it go away. We walk alongside and with Jesus’ shame, humiliation, persecution, and embarrassment, with a beam across our back but joyfully and cheerfully accept it.
It is more than a moment of a hand raised or guided prayer, it is coming to the end of ourselves, dying to sin daily, willing to live out the radical ways of love to others, all for Christ’s glory to be revealed through His disciples.
To be brave is to not carry alone. Allow Jesus to walk with you, allow His people to help you. In the vulnerability that the cross exposes it also illuminates God’s glory to be revealed and raised up for the world to see.
