Long Way Home
By: Lori Ennis
As someone who has moved around a lot throughout my life, I've learned to form deep connections quickly. Every new place we settle in and every person we meet becomes a part of our life's story.
If honest, it seems we just keep adding more family members to our lives. We develop memories for a lifetime and dig deep roots in whatever new Oikos God puts us in. Each place we call home, whether for a few months or several years, is a true gift from God…a place He provides for us to grow, learn, and love.
And I’m a “Go Big or Go Home” type of person. I dig really deep roots, and I try to love really strongly, and I definitely hold on really tightly.
But while God tells us to love Him and to love His people, He also reminds us that this world is not our home.
John 14:2-3 says, "My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
It's important to remember that our earthly homes, no matter how much we love them, are transient. The Bible warns against holding too tightly onto worldly possessions in Matthew 6:19-21. The treasures we gather, the relationships we cherish, and the places we call home are blessings from God, meant to enrich our earthly lives.
But, they are not the end goal. We are not home, and hallelujah, because nothing can compare with our eternal home.
Revelation 21:4 tells us what it will be like. "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Our present sorrows, the pain of parting, the uncertainty of the future - none of this happens in our true home.
Steven Curtis Chapman reminds us in his song, “Long Way Home,” that when the weight of the world is hard or heavy, we’re just traveling through…
“When we can't take another step,
Our Father will pick us up and carry us in his arms.
And even on the best days, he says to remember we aren't home yet,
So don't get too comfortable
Because really all we are is just pilgrims passing through.”
Don’t get too comfortable here, no matter what the world tells you. Be glad for the joy this earth holds in His people and His gifts, but remember…we’re not Home yet. Hang on, the best is yet to come.
