Killing Me Softly Devotional Series – Week 1 – Comparison - Tuesday - Amie Donovan
Comparison of Thoughts

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV)

Are your thoughts from the Accuser or the Savior?

Revelation 12:10 refers to Satan as the “accuser of our brothers and sisters.” He used to be a mighty angel in Heaven. Now Satan is an accuser whose sole desire is to condemn us before God. The reason for Satan’s change? Pride. Competition. Jealousy. Satan’s passion was exaltation above God. When Satan found himself cast out of Heaven, he made it his mission to turn us from our Creator by accusing us before Him. Why do we live our lives competing with one another, overworking to complete one another? I asked God this exact question recently. Do you know the answer that hit my mind? Our thinking.

We often compare ourselves to one another rather than embracing the role God created us to complete. When we compare, negative thoughts enter our minds. This comparison trap drives our response to compete. When you think negatively, do you assume it’s God talking? We know Jesus tells us that God transforms our thinking and prunes us to grow us, so it’s easy as Christians to call this type of thinking God-given. What if you’re wrong? One of my students asked it this way. How do you know if your thoughts are from the Accuser or the Savior? Well, do they lead you into shame by way of condemnation, or do they convict you to change knowing we don’t have to live in lies because of The Truth that is Jesus?

I fight against Satan’s lies by filling my mind with the truth of scripture. God’s Word leads to freedom that you can not only read about but have the experience. My faith goal is to be so focused on pleasing my Creator; I don’t have time to worry about what my neighbor is or isn’t doing for the kingdom. Hebrews 12:1-2 reminds us:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Would you pray this prayer with me:
Father God, would you reveal to me the schemes of my Accuser? Would you be louder than the thoughts Satan uses against me? Would you fill my head with the truth that I don’t have to compete with my sisters or brothers because we all are one part of one body, all working to please our One God, YOU. May we rejoice knowing we’re a team and don’t walk faith alone. -Amen
