The Storm Doesn’t Get the Last Word
By: Sheila Sonon
I sit here by the window, watching the leaves change color and feeling the crisp air drift in through the crack I left open. There’s something peaceful about this moment, even though my mind wants to wander back to the storms in my life. Sometimes I still get frustrated when things don’t go the way I planned. But then I stop and think—who am I to complain when there are people out there fighting harder battles? Some can’t afford their prescriptions. Others are praying for enough money to keep the lights on or longing for someone to talk to when everything feels like it’s falling apart.
I see many of you weekly, sometimes daily. When I ask, “How are you? How’s your family?”—most of the time, I hear, “Good,” “Great,” or “Busy.” Rarely do I hear someone say, “My life is in shambles, and I don’t know what to do.” I used to wonder why that is. But now I think—it’s because even when life feels like a big bully, we’ve learned to praise God in the middle of our storm.
We all have problems—big and small—and yes, we still have to face them. But when we step back, we realize that our problems are so much smaller compared to the greatness and character of God. In my season, He’s forgiving and patient. Maybe in yours, He’s compassionate and sympathetic. The truth is, He’s all of those things and more. The deeper we dig into Scripture, the more we uncover the beauty of who He is. The longer we walk with Him, the more we realize—He never changes.
Psalm 107 says, “He stilled the storm to a whisper.” Gratitude doesn’t wait for the waves to stop—it grows in the middle of them.
