Call On Me
By: Pastor Melissa
Jeremiah 29:11-13
A very familiar verse, one that my husband calls the “coffee mug verses”. These are the ones that are often taken out of context, make us feel good, and are easily remembered. For good reason, these particular verses are the ones we can relate to give us hope, and make us feel good.
Jeremiah in despair and upset is pleading and listening to God. Yahweh speaks to him, and tells him, just wait, more is coming. The people will be in exile for a while and it is because of their disobedience and sin, but take heart, because “I know the plans I have for you”.
This past year may have been a whirlwind of a year for some. Death, sickness, loss, and more never gave you a moment to breathe and take a minute before something else came. Like waves, hardship kept crashing on your shore. Here we are at the start of a new year and perhaps you are wondering if this year will be like the last, could it get any worse? Or if you are a bit more optimistic and you are standing on this New Year with hope that 2024 will not be so heavy. With either position, acknowledging that you have walked through the rough seasons this last year, doesn’t go unnoticed, and God hears your call in the middle of it.
He says that I have “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Amid the uncertainty, hardship, and unknowns, God says to call on Him, come to Him, pray to Him and He will hear you. When you seek Him with all your heart, He always finds you.
Jeremiah was probably not ready for God to tell him that more hardship was coming but God didn’t leave Jeremiah without hope for the people of Israel. God does have good plans for you. Whether that comes with deep hardship or blissful living is not guaranteed but what is, is God is with you in every moment, all you have to do is call on Him.
