Not Enough
By: Pastor Amie Donovan

Not enough.

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” -John 6:35

Have you ever heard the story of Jesus feeding a large crowd with 5 small loaves and 2 small fish? I want to share my favorite part of this story with you. First! Jesus is funny.

“When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” (John 6v5)

Catch this! Jesus (who is GOD) asks this ill-equipped disciple (it wasn’t even John or Peter), “What are we going to do here?”

“Is Jesus serious?” I think to myself. I see you, God. He just healed the sick in front of these guys. He’s turned water into wine! He’s done things that are unexplainable and so much bigger than a shortage of food for an afternoon service.  Yet, as scripture recalls, our Savior asks Philip, “What are we going to do?” and Phillip responds to this question with a problem.

“We don’t have enough….”

Andrew then speaks into the problem with another problem. I love how the NIV translation says it.

“All we have is five small loaves, and two small fish!” -John 6v7-9

Their answer isn’t wrong. I don’t even personally see it as a lack of faith. I see them addressing the reality of their circumstance. They simply don’t have enough.

So why did Jesus ask them instead of doing for them?

My best guess? It’s when we get to the end of ourselves that we realize our need for God. What we have can seem not enough whether that’s money, or resources or even time.

BUT GOD.

Our problem is bigger than our bank account, pantry, or calendar. Our problem is looking to things that run out, dry up and disappear over resting in this truth:
"Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” -John 6:35
