Point To Him
By: Lori Ennis
When my son was 3, we went to a very crowded ‘pumpkin patch’ in south Florida near our home. Now, if you’ve ever been there in October, you know it’s hot. Still.
So we ran around, did all the things, sweat like crazy and left.
As we drove out, my darling boy told me, “Mama, I took some of the corn.” He was talking about those huge corn kernels baby pool tubs are filled with and kids go crazy sliding and gliding around in.
I told him that they must have just gotten in his pocket as he was tumbling and he said, “No. I took them. I wanted to take them with me.”
My husband looked at me with that, “Please. It’s hot. We just walked two miles to the car. PLEASE.”
But he knew better. And so as he started to drive back to the front, I told my son that taking things was wrong, even if it was ‘just some corn kernels,’ because the intent is still a heart problem. We don’t take things that are not ours.
I toddled my adorable little boy to the register, and gave the cashier a knowing look as I said, “I’m sorry, ma’am, but my son needs to tell you something.”
He looked at me, nervously, but then said, “I took these and I’m sorry. Will you forgive me?” Then he put five or six corn kernels on the counter.
She looked at me like I might have been on drugs. She couldn’t understand why I’d make my obviously hot and tired baby go all the way back to check out for ‘taking’ a handful of nasty old corn kernels.
But I did.
“For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.” 2 Corinthians 8:21
Sometimes acting with integrity is painful and awkward and the last thing you want to do.
A friend of mine always says, “You’re either pointing people to Jesus or you’re pointing them away from Him.”
May I encourage you to point to Him, despite the pain, aggravation and discomfort you may deal with as you behave with integrity? It’s right in the eyes of the Lord, and the world is watching.
