‘Crazy People’
By: Allison Hand
Mark 5:18-19 “As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
I am a very literal person, so I must admit when I first heard the words “Crazy People” for a sermon series my mind instantly went to the story of Jesus healing a crazy man in the book of Mark. Jesus came upon this man who was possessed with demons. He was so uncontrollable that the people of his town forced him to live on the outskirts. Then Jesus enters in and gives him a new life freed from his demons! But the people who heard about this were uncomfortable, some probably fearful of this miraculous change in this man’s life.
What’s most crazy is that it's not the demon-possessed man who’s crazy. It's the people around him who didn’t want what Jesus offered.
Been in that situation?
Jesus gives you new life but those around you don’t want anything to do with that or are maybe even fearful of the change from old to new.
I can see why this man asks to leave the town and go with Jesus. To be in His presence where all feels safe and comfortable. I have longed for that as well. But Jesus doesn’t want to remove us from the “crazy people.” He wants us living our faith around them. Loving them. Being in the world but not of the world. Declaring his goodness and power to those “crazy people”.
Is there an area of your life you have asked God to remove or remove you from? Ask God to align your heart with His. God asks us to stay where we are at so we can live and proclaim what God can do!
