Confession
By: Pastor Amie Donovan

Weary of wandering from my God
And now made willing to return,
I hear, and bow me to the rod;
For thee, not without hope, I mourn.
I have an advocate above,
A friend before the throne of love.

O Jesus, full of truth and grace,
More full of grace than I of sin,
Yet once again I seek thy face,
Open thine arms and take me in,
And freely my backslidings heal
And love the faithless sinner still.

Thou knowest the way to bring me back,
My fallen spirit to restore;
O for thy truth and mercy’s sake
Forgive, and bid me sin no more!
The ruins of my soul repair
And make my heart a house of prayer.

-Charles Wesley

If you cannot learn from my success, then would you learn from my failures? For far too long, I thought my sins were best kept between my God and me. I mean after all, didn’t Jesus take on a cross so I can go to God directly? What a limited way to think. James, the brother of Jesus, says this about confession:

“Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16

A few years back I learned the power of vulnerability. Something powerful happens when you rip your chest open in front of another person and share the details of your thoughts, actions and desires.

For too long, I allowed surface-level prayer requests to hinder the growth that comes from accountability. “The ruins of my soul repair, And make my heart a house of prayer.” Something happens when you join hands with a believer and allow light to expose your hidden.

Oh Jesus, would you teach us the blessing of walking together in ALL things? Even the ugliness of our broken? Amen
