How To Strengthen Our Souls
By: Allison Hand

“Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.”
Romans 16:25-27 ESV

Imagine you’re at the gym.

(I confess I don’t got to the gym at all).

But let’s imagine together that a person walks in, uses each piece of gym equipment wrong, and only spends a few moments at each one.

If I really think about this I start to smile and give a chuckle because this person probably looks silly!

He (or she) is not really working out! They aren’t building strength!

(And now we need to ask God for forgiveness for laughing at this imaginary person and go help them.)

In all seriousness, I must confess that I’m that person. Only this is how I spend my time with God sometimes.

We spend time working out to strengthen our bodies.

We spend time with God and His Word to strengthen our souls.

But I tend to make my “quiet time” with God almost like a formula. Sit down, read scripture, maybe learn a little bit about that scripture, pray and move on.

Time with God isn’t a formula. It’s an experience. An experience of His Gospel and love. And I miss this in most of my quiet times. I miss the deep and inward and emotional response and experience I should be getting every time I sit with God and read His Word. And I’m wondering if there are others like me that fall into this at times. We’re missing out on what God really has for us.

I intentionally didn’t explain my chosen scripture well.

Go back and reread it.
Make it sink in.
Understand the magnitude of it.
Understand what God really has done for us.

Remind yourself of what the gospel message and how important that is to us. Know that we have King who doesn’t keep His glory to himself like earthly kings, but instead freely gives his glory to us.

Then…think of something you are going through. Struggles at home, struggles with your teen, a medical or financial issue–whatever.

Speak that concern out loud then fill in with the above scripture right after.
Then stay with God for a moment longer.

Experience what he wants you to know today from this verse.
