But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching.
He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.” (Luke 23:5)
Martin Luther King Jr. was a very controversial civil rights leader. He was a prophetic voice who challenged the injustices of racism and discrimination. Martin Luther King Jr. was often criticized and even challenged by the establishment. Why was he so controversial? He was so controversial because he spoke the truth. The truth will always challenge a lie, and it will cause those who are opposing the truth to become angry. It is not uncommon to be attacked when you speak truth that offends those in authority.
Jesus was accused of being a rebel because of his teachings. The Jewish leaders spread rumors about him because of the truth of his teachings. Jesus was controversial because he spoke against the hypocrisy of the religious leaders. Several times his life was threatened because he spoke the truth, and he was eventually killed because the truth caused controversy.
You and I, as Christians, are to refrain from lying regardless of the cost. It takes no effort to remain silent or to lie when our status is threatened. But Christ commands us to speak the truth when the masses do not accept it. Speak the truth and leave the results to God.
Speak the truth.
