When Hope Collides With Hopeless
By: Pastor Amie Donovan
“Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with Him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, His heart went out to her and He said, ‘Don’t cry.’ -Luke 7:11-13
Of all the things we tell a parent at the funeral of their child, “Don’t cry” isn’t one of them. We would go so far as to call that insensitive, even inconsiderate. Yet, this passage says that when Jesus saw her, His heart went out to her. Why would Jesus tell this woman not to cry? Let’s continue reading…
Then He went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. -Luke 7:14-15
Jesus sees beyond our hopelessness and speaks into what we feel is beyond return. Jesus sees you, and His heart goes out to you.
What is in your box?
Is it your marriage? Is it a relationship with a child or parent? Is it your job status or your trust in God? Do you feel that your life is without hope?
One thing I love most about this story is that Jesus didn’t need to touch what was dead to revive it. He just needed to touch what was holding the dead down. This morning is God telling you to stop crying? Maybe in this moment, He desires you to see He can make all things new. Is it possible that today, what he desires to bring back to life is YOU?
If so, it’s time my friend to let God touch what is holding you down so you can GET UP.
Abba Father,
Your love so wide; it’s impossible for us to get around it! Thank you for speaking into our hopelessness. We see You, and thank you for seeing us. May we walk today in the truth that all things are possible with you. Help us to live expectant of your greatness.
In Jesus name,
Amen
