God’s Presence in Your Wallet
By: Anna Williams
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have,
because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
-Hebrews 13:5-6 NIV
What do you envision when I ask you to picture yourself “living the dream” with your finances?
Does your mind immediately conjure up an image of you standing on a speed boat while it bounces on the waves during a perfect summer day? Or are you sunbathing by the pool behind the biggest and prettiest house on the block? (Our current local weather certainly fuels these thoughts.) Or maybe your thoughts are more altruistic, and you envision throwing handfuls of hundred-dollar bills at crowds of people.
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing inherently wrong with any of those things, but wouldn’t it be better to have God amid our dream? My prayer is that our dream would be to stand before Him and hear “Well done, good and faithful servant – whether you had little or you had much during your life, you always sought to please Me”. Then, I pray that we would live in a manner to realize that dream.
The verses above can generate peace in our lives as they serve as a reminder to us that the source of our provision is not just limited to our job, our business, or our abilities. Everything we have comes from God and he has promised that he will never leave us or forsake us.
Just knowing this truth in your heart can make a world of difference when you’ve just had the rug pulled out from under you. Maybe it’s a new medical diagnosis, or a surprise lay-off at work or financial support unexpectedly withdrawn – those things can’t wreck our peace when we are focused on our Provider.
