The Answer
I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer; Lord, do not delay.
(Ps. 70:5)
A stranger showed up at our Alabama church one morning, desperate and asking if we might have some food for his family. His life had suddenly changed with little warning and he was running short on funds. A lost job and mounting bills had forced him to move his family out of their comfortable home and into a run-down trailer. Of special concern was his youngest daughter who had serious health issues that required extra care and resources. That morning we filled a few bags with food and ministered to this family with food and finances as well as the difficult weeks that followed.
Eventually life turned better. The food and financial help that the church had so generously provided was no longer needed. He got a new job and took his family out of that dark, dismal place. I still remember the day he showed us their new home, inviting and bright, light pouring through the windows. The contrast was striking. “I was at my lowest and didn’t know where to turn,” he said. “Then God led me to you.”
That’s what God does. He hears. He leads. He helps. He delivers. And sometimes he chooses us to be the answer. And when he does, may we have the wisdom and open heart to respond.
Be the answer to someone’s needs.
