Killing Me Softly Devotional Series – Week 4 – Imitating - Tuesday - Amie Donovan
Be Who You Are

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Be who you are. We've likely all said it. We've probably all heard it. For some of us, these words comfort, knowing who God created us to be is the best version of ourselves. For others, these words have proven terrifying as we find our identities confusing. Recently, I had coffee with a young lady who expressed that she does not know the "who" to who she "really" is.

Is she the person around her parents where she feels the most comfortable? Is she the person around her friends, where she shares the things she cannot communicate with most people? Or is she the person she sees in the mirror when all alone with her unspoken fears and desires effortlessly flowing through her head, gazing at the ever-changing disciple she is becoming?
How is one to be who it is they are when they are unsure of themselves? When our identities get anchored to the wrong thing, confusion ensues. We often adapt to the environment we are in, thus causing us to question who it is we "really" are. The most authentic version of ourselves can only always exist in who God says we are. He is, after all, our Creator. We will be most comfortable in our skin when we recognize that skin exists, intentionally made by our LORD, who sees different as beautiful.

In short, you are the one whom God loved first in 1 John 4:19. You are the one God created in his very own image as promised in Genesis 1:26. The way you think, speak, and serve is most effective when in line with God's will. After all, you are God’s handiwork, created to do good things which God prepared in advance for you to do as Ephesians 2:10 tells us. Be who you are. Don't look left. Don't look right. Look up to God for your definition. Be the person that God created you to be. He did not create you to be like everyone else, and the longer that remains your goal, the longer you will feel stuck wondering who you are.

Pray this prayer with me:
Father God, thank you for uniquely creating me as I am today. My prayer is I live in the truth of your vision for my life. May I never dishonor you by trying to be someone else. That claim implies you make mistakes, and God, my soul, knows that is not true. Praise you, LORD, for your ways are good. Keep me in step with you all my days. Amen.
