Direct my Today

James 4:13-14 (NIV)
"Now listen, you who say, today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

About four years ago, I experienced a reminder of how short life really can be when I heard the word cancer. There is nothing more humbling than the realization that tomorrow genuinely is not promised. After weeks of tests and waiting, the diagnosis ended up not being cancer, but the more incredible blessing was what I learned in the wait. I learned that while we may not have a tomorrow, we do have the gift of today. I stopped asking God to help me accomplish specific goals and began to ask God to use me in every moment.

In that decision, I no longer feared death but instead looked at life as an opportunity to serve God and love others daily. I am not saying we do not plan ahead or dream of our futures. I am merely implying that, like the verse above states, "We do not even know what will happen tomorrow," so let us make this opportunity count like it is the last one God will give us before calling us home. To truly live Brave, we have to embrace circumstance, love people, and live boldly regardless of what is around the bend. We all long to be in our eternal home, but we cannot miss out on what is in front of us right now.

Father God, please make us brave in how we view our life. Understanding that tomorrow may never come, but today is a chance to love you back in so many ways. Please help us to truly embrace what you have given us and choose joy over fear. Please help us to choose right now, over next week. Please help us to see eternity with you as the ultimate prize and view the mission field we call this life as our workplace. Amen
