He’s Got The Keys
By: Chrissy Cooney
Revelation 1:17-18
Have you ever been given the keys to something? A home or apartment? A workplace? This past year I was given the keys to a storage unit used by the organization that I work for. There is nothing even a little bit glamorous about that storage unit. It’s actually kind of dank. It doesn’t smell great. It feels a little buggy to me. However, when I accepted the keys I also accepted authority. Once those keys were in my possession, I had the authority to determine what goes in and what stays out of that storage unit. I got the keys and became the storage unit gatekeeper (still nothing glamorous about that).
In the book of Revelation John writes, “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades’” (Revelation 1:17-18).
When Jesus says that He holds the keys of death and Hades, he’s talking about spiritual death – eternal separation from God. He’s telling John in this revelation that He, Jesus, has authority over eternity – over who goes into eternal separation from God and who stays out. He is the Alpha and Omega (the First and the Last) and He is the only Living God; He is the Resurrection Power that defeated death. Glory to God! He not only has the keys – He IS The Key; the only Door to eternal life. Death itself must bow to Him. Life is available only through Him.
On that cross, in that grave, through His resurrection - Jesus won the battle and now has authority for all of eternity. All who will call on His name, all who will enter a relationship with Him, all who will accept Him as their Savior and King are Redeemed; saved and set free from the prison of Death. Because of Easter, He’s got the keys – the authority is His - and we can be free!
