Our Advocate
By: Anna Williams
“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him.
But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
-John 14:15-17 NLT
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
-Romans 8:26 NLT
I have read this passage in John multiple times in the past but for the first time recently this descriptive word “advocate” being applied by Jesus when referring to the Holy Spirit really stood out to me.
Perhaps it resonates more because of the season that I am currently in with my own life. I spend many hours of each week advocating for my non-verbal child. I have spent years getting to know her and learning how to understand what she struggles to communicate due to her body's limitations.
What an amazing thought… that God loves us so much that he sends his Spirit to reside inside of us to live each day with us; to experience our ups and downs, and to help intercede on our behalf when words fail! God is for us and will go to any length to reach our hearts.
Are you struggling with pain so intense that you cannot vocalize it? Maybe you have been betrayed by a loved one and aren’t sure how to even take one step forward towards forgiveness… Is your mind so overwhelmed and clouded that you feel like you can’t even form a coherent thought? Don’t despair! Call out to God and ask him to draw near with his Holy Spirit to bring peace, comfort, and wordless prayers on your behalf. He is ALWAYS faithful.
