Divine Encounter
By Pastor Amie Donovan
The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy-the Son of God.” -Luke 1:35
This is one of the most well-known passages in Scripture. We hear it every Christmas! The angel is talking to the virgin Mary. He tells her that she will have a child. The angel says The Holy Spirit will come upon her, and the power of the Most High will overshadow her and she will give birth to the Son of God!
It’s about that point in the sermon we all shout “Amen!” Our minds are filled with awe over a young girl deeply favored by God being told she will be the mother of our Messiah! I sometimes wonder, however, if we miss another awe moment?
How often have we sat in awe over the power of The Holy Spirit in this story? He is after all the one who overshadowed Mary and enabled her to conceive. The Holy Spirit is all-powerful! He was at work in the days of Mary and He is still at work today!
So what is The Holy Spirit doing now?
He is at work in your life and mine! When we say we’ve given our lives over to Christ we are saying we’ve had an encounter with The Holy Spirit! That He has come upon us and given us new life! That we are no longer anchored to our old selves, but are daily being transformed into people that reflect the Son of God!
Does your life reflect a divine encounter with The Holy Spirit? When people look at your life, does it look different from the world? That’s my goal! To daily reflect God to the point people sit in awe of His great power at work in His church!
Praise you God. We see you. We sit in awe of you. Worthy are you alone. May we daily live out the encounters we’ve experienced with you!
