Jesus – God with Me
By: Anna Williams
“So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son.”- John 1:14 NLT
I experienced a real-life miracle when I was 5 years old.
I was born and raised in the Piney Woods of East Texas as the 6th child of my parents. As you can imagine, I wore a lot of hand-me-downs, but some kind friend of the family bought for me a beautiful yellow sweatsuit (Hello, 1989).
We lived down a long dirt driveway and attended a little church just further down our road. On Sundays when the weather was nice, we would all walk down our driveway, onto the road and then up the hill to that church.
One fine day we were running late for church (as all large families naturally do) and as I hurried down the driveway, I tripped and landed right in the middle of a massive puddle. Of course, I was wearing my brand-new yellow outfit and my entire right leg was caked in Texas clay.
There was no way it would just brush off, and despite my tears and fervent wishes to return home to change, my mother insisted we couldn't arrive any later to church so continue onward I must. I was devastated but obedient. I will never forget I walked on for another 50 feet and then as I passed my aunt's mailbox, I looked down and my pants were completely clean! There wasn't a speck of dirt anywhere on them. I ran back to my mother, exclaiming "Look Momma, God told the angels to clean my pants!!" We were all astounded and unable to account for it other than it being a miracle.
Believe what you will about my story, but I have often thought back to that experience and wondered why God chose to show His glory to me at that moment. I can think of other miracles I would honestly prefer to have. But as the years have passed and I've processed it more, I think He did it to show me that even the little things in my life matter greatly to him. If He responded in such a mighty way in that instance, how much more will He do with the big challenges in my life?
God is unfailing, unwavering, and always faithful. He made his home among us and even knows the exact count of hairs on our heads at any given time. (Luke 12:7) He is with you when you walk into that medical appointment to discuss the test results. He is with you when you sit down at that IEP table to discuss your child's needs in education. He walks with you as you move through the hallways of school. He will never leave your side.
