We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
-Romans 6:4 NIV
In some parts of the religious tradition following a baptism, a priest will turn to the congregation and cast small droplets of water in their direction with the directive “Remember your baptism.” The command is more than “take a moment to remember the day.” In fact for those baptized as infants, that is not even possible.
The admonition means closer to “remember who you are” or “remember who God has made you.” This is exactly what Paul is telling the Romans. Let your baptism be a reminder that the old you has died, just as Jesus died. And remember that just as he was raised from the dead- we are now raised in our spirits to a new and glorious life in Christ.
Today I want to remember my baptism in how I live. I want to remember the life Jesus has called me to, leaving behind my selfish, immoral, and sinful ways. I want to live in the generous, faithful, and righteous ways that God desires for me. Daily I want to walk in a way that remembers my baptism, not as a moment in my life, but as my way of life.
Today are you living in a way that remembers your baptism?
