Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”

Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

When Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do people say I am,” it wasn’t a sign of ignorance, self-conceit, or vanity. Also, He wasn’t fishing for compliments either.  Jesus was provoking the disciples to consider their level of faith.  The disciples responded with the various things that they have heard about Jesus.  Jesus then directs the question to the disciples, “who do you say I am?”  In other words, are you following the crowds?  Or do you have another, more insightful answer?  What do you really think?  Peter then speaks up and affirms his belief, “You are the Messiah.”  God, in His grace, had opened the disciples’ eyes to see Jesus for who He truly was.
What About You? Who Do You Say That Jesus Is?

What sets us apart is that we believe that the God of the universe took on human flesh, lived among us, and then, in His immense love, died that we might be forgiven. If we proclaim Jesus as Lord and submit ourselves to Him, we are invited to live with Him forever. Are we willing to not follow the crowds but accept this great love of Jesus as Christ?

Prayer Focus – Today, we are praying for 911 workers and first responders who meet people every day who are in the worst moments of their lives. Pray for their safety and that the love of Christ would flow to the hurting and afraid in traumatic times.
