Stay the Course

Stay The Course
Good Friday, April 7

By: Pastor Todd Crofford

Don't you realize that I am able right now to call to my Father, and twelve companies — more, if I want them — of fighting angels would be here, battle-ready? But if I did that, how would the Scriptures come true that say this is the way it has to be?"
-Matthew 26:53-54

It is the dark of night on Thursday in the garden, and the wheels are coming off.  Judas the betrayer has arrived, the guards are seizing Jesus, and one disciple swings his sword wildly, taking off the ear of an adversary.  But Jesus refuses to fight back. Instead, He tells His disciples- if I wanted a fight, this wouldn’t be close. I could bring countless angels and this would be over before it starts.

But He doesn’t want a fight. He won’t defend himself.  Jesus is willing to be arrested, tried, beaten and killed without being rescued. Why?  Because we needed rescued more than He did.

When Jesus hangs on a cross on this day that we call Good Friday, it is not the nails that hold Him to the cross, it is His love that holds Him there.  At any moment, at every moment, Jesus had a way out. One word and everything changes.  But He stays the course and pays the ultimate price out of His immeasurable love for us.

I don’t know how many plans you have today or even how full your Easter vacation weekend is.  But whatever else is on your mental docket today, just stop for a minute. Stop and consider all Jesus did for you out of love.  He could have bailed out, but He stayed the course, and bailed us out from an eternity of sin and death.  What a Savior!
