The Blessed Giver
By: Nicole Goddard
Do you know about Real Life’s super amazing Friend in Need Ministry? Shameless plug here, but it’s really one of the best ministries to get involved in! Our wonderful volunteers show up on the porch with a meal for those who have undergone a surgery, welcomed a new baby, are receiving treatments or are just in a season of deep need.
In the handful of years I’ve led this ministry I’ve learned something important – the blessing to the giver can surpass that of the recipient. I’ve sat on porches and had conversations that were a balm to my soul. I’ve experienced joy giving attention to older siblings that might be feeling a little slighted by their new baby brother or sister. I’ve listened to countless stories of miraculous timings, incredible journeys and often times healing that leave me driving away rubbing the goosebumps on my arms. Sometimes it’s a silent drop off that gives me the warm and fuzzies just knowing that I was able to take one thing off of someone’s plate by putting something on it.
Each delivery is different, but every opportunity has filled me with awe for our amazing Father and so much gratitude for the opportunity to serve the needs of one of his children. Paul explained it this way to the church of Corinth:
For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 2 Corinthians 9:12-13
Paul may have been referencing direct monetary contributions in this passage, but don’t underestimate the generosity of a warm meal or lending a listening ear. The receiver will certainly give thanks for your gift, but I’ll bet you will walk away with even more gratitude!
