Title: I Know Them and They Know Me
By: Pastor Adam Munshaw
“And Samuel replied, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.”
The call of Samuel reminds us both to be available to God and listening for His voice.
In our daily lives, we can get so accustomed to noise and to the busy. Whether from the sounds of toddlers running around the house, the work phone that does not seem to stop ringing, or the ever-demanding schedule of go-go-go.
Tyler Staton in his book Searching for Enough writes “Distraction is fast food. It doesn’t nourish us, but it does work for deferring hunger.”
Maybe we’re praying for change, or to experience God’s presence, or to see Him move in our lives in a particular way - meanwhile, our Bibles sit on our bookshelves or serve as coasters on our end tables more than living Words or daily bread.
In John 10:27, Jesus is gathered in Jerusalem during the Festival of Dedication and speaks to the people in the temple the following truth:
“My sheep will listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
One fear of mine is that we will pray to God to hear His voice, but never open His Word. We will sing His songs, but miss the invitations that come from His Spirit. We will get so caught up in the noise - in the busy - that we miss the Great Shepherd inviting His sheep with a simple “follow me.”
Jesus, we welcome Your presence here. We ask You to quiet any noise that would keep us from hearing Your voice. Any worries or distractions, we choose to lay at your feet. You are the Great Shepherd who knows Your sheep. Help us to know you more and to hear your voice today.
