Jesus came to seek and save
By: Pastor Bob Cooney
Jesus said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” (Luke 19:10 NLT)
Sometimes I come across a passage in Scripture in which Jesus confronts someone (or a group of “someones”) who do not follow Him, or even directly challenge or threaten Him; and I wonder why Jesus would even waste His time with such conversations. I mean, with a word He could just wipe those people out or at least just whisk Himself away from there and spend His time with people who would care about what He had to say about the Kingdom of God.
Zacchaeus, a “chief tax collector”, one who was known to be corrupt, climbed a tree just to get a view of Jesus as He was walking by. Jesus saw him and said, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today (v.5).”
Jesus was not impressed by the fact that Zacchaeus climbed a tree; rather, He was impressed by Zacchaeus’s need for a Savior. While others in the crowd sneered at Zacchaeus, Jesus reached out to Him. This was a turnaround moment for that tax collector!
Thank you, Jesus, that you do not turn away from those who are not already “cleaned up”. Thank you, Jesus, for inviting us ALL to relationship with You – regardless where you find us. Thank you, Jesus, for being the Shepherd that leaves the ninety-nine to save the one.
