Mirror Mirror on the Wall
By: Sheila Sonon
When I first started going to Real Life, I was a baby Christian. And not like the kind of baby who can crawl or babble—I mean fresh-out-of-the-wrapper, brand-new baby. The funny part? I went to private school my entire life, but somehow never opened a Bible.
The first time I heard “we’re made in the image of God,” my brain went straight to: Do I look like Him? Like in a physical way? Does He have brown hair, dimples when He smiles or get sunburned at the thought of being in the sun?
That’s when I decided it was time to actually get a Bible I could understand. The only one I owned was a King James version, and all the “thees” and “thous” made me feel like I was reading Shakespeare instead of The Word of God. I bought a new Bible and started at the very beginning—Genesis. And sure enough, right there in 1:27 it says: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
The way I picture it is like this: we’re mirrors, designed to shine God’s light. Sin flipped the mirror the wrong way, so instead of reflecting Him, we started staring at ourselves. And honestly? Humanity’s been obsessed with its own reflection ever since. But in Christ, God flips us back around, wipes off the smudges, and lets His glory shine through us again.
Being made in God’s image isn’t about His nose or your smile. It’s about reflecting His love, His goodness, His patience, and His grace. Every act of forgiveness or kindness is like holding up the mirror and saying, “Look at Him!”
