Guard Your Heart
By: Nicole Goddard
Have you ever felt an overwhelming calling on your life that seems just out of reach? Doors open, prayers are answered and you step out in faith and obedience. But just when you think you can cross the threshold, the door closes again.
My husband and I have been walking through a long season of this. The reoccurring cycle of hope, uncertainty and disappointment continuously leaves us confused. Is this truly a calling from Christ, or is this a selfish pursuit? The opportunities and signs keep finding us, so surely God is leading us to this, right? It can be so hard not to wallow in disappointment every time things fall through.
Our family and friends tell us, “It just wasn’t meant to be” and “God has something even better planned”. While we know this to be true, it only soothes the burn. In our weakness, we’ve felt anger, bitterness and self-pity. It’s in those moments that I’ve felt the enemy lurking like a lion, ready to pounce and convince us that we’ll never make it. He wants us to be restless and dissatisfied with what we have, robbing us of our trust in the Lord.
We’re learning we must guard our hearts above all else in this journey. We don’t know what the future has in store, but we DO KNOW our God. He is our Father, our provider and he will make all our paths straight and aligned to his purpose.
We will praise him in the waiting – not just when he comes through. But in the waiting, the confusion, the uncertainty.
Why my soul, are you so dejected?
Why are you in such turmoil?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him,
My Savior and my God.
Psalm 42:11
