What Does Love Require of Me?
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
“For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law – I stopped trying to meet all of its requirements -so that I might live for God. My old self has been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2:19-20 NLT, p.169 in Messiah).
I’ll be honest, I’m a rule follower. I love a good set of guidelines to follow and parameters to stay within. I love it when things are black and white and the correct answer is clear.
I also know how often I fall short, and I know that there are gray areas where the right answer isn’t clear.
I’m so thankful that our relationship with Jesus is not all about the rules. I don’t have to ask daily, “what does the law require of me?” Instead, I ask “what does Love require of me?” Set free from legalism and bound by Love, life is less about checked boxes and met requirements and more about living in a way that is pleasing to the Lord.
Here are a couple of practical examples of this freedom –
Studying God’s Word becomes less about how many chapters you’ve read, and more about how you’ve allowed the Word to speak into your life and transform you.
Loving your neighbor becomes less about what you’ve done, how many hours you’ve served, or how much money you’ve given and it becomes more about treating others with grace, seeing a need and meeting it quietly, and serving with a pure heart.
Your turn… where have you been set free from the law and bound by love? What does Love require of you?
