But is it True?
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
Do you ever get caught in a negative thought spiral, like I do?
For about the past eight years, I’ve had a 40-minute commute to and from work each day. If I’m not careful, I can have entire made-up arguments with my husband and tense conversations with a coworker before I’m ever actually sitting down to talk with them. I can worry myself into a state of panic and frenzy before I have the facts of the day in front of me.
And that’s not only unhealthy, it’s unholy.
We are directed in scripture to, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise” (Philippians 4:8, p. 232 in Messiah)
When our thoughts begin to spiral, we can ask ourselves, “But is it True?”
That thing that I’m worried about happening tomorrow, it hasn’t actually happened yet, and it might never happen! Instead of fretting over it and giving myself an upset stomach, I can talk to God about it and ask Him for help. I can ask for His Peace in that situation.
That argument with my husband… I may just walk in the door to an apology. Or maybe, if I spend some time meditating on God’s Word, I’ll figure out that I should be the one apologizing!
Instead of allowing my thoughts to spiral into darkness, I can put on some worship music and focus on the Holy One, I can spend some time thanking God out loud for the many ways He has blessed me today. I can focus on what is excellent and worthy of praise!
Holy Spirit, please help me redirect my thoughts in these ways!
