Fair
By: Pastor Todd Crofford

Life is not fair. The circumstances surrounding John’s death are nothing short of infuriating. A life snuffed out because of immoral choices, lust, and foolish promises by an evil man. This was so upsetting that Matthew reports, “When Jesus heard the news he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone” -Matthew 13, NLT

Jesus was certainly upset at the death of his own cousin, but the unfairness of it all was a weight on him as well. This is a foreshadowing of what Jesus himself will suffer- a righteous man dying at the hands of the unrighteous.  (No, John was not perfect or sinless, but even Jesus referred to him as the among the greatest to ever walk the earth.)

There is no doubt we all will face some unfair things in life. We will be unfairly passed over for a promotion because someone else leveraged favoritism. We will be accused wrongly, or gossiped about unfairly. We take care of our body but get sick anyways.  The list is endless.

As we get closer to Good Friday, we can bring our frustrations to the Lord when life is not fair. He fully understands. He has experienced this himself and his heart is touched with our grief.

In the end, things may not play out fairly for us, but we can trust God in the midst of the frustration and refuse to become bitter in a world that will always be unfair until Jesus comes again.
