Live a Worthy Life
By: Pastor Adam Munshaw
In Ephesians 4:1, you hear Paul’s pastoral heart beaming with urgency… “Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.”
Paul writes not from comfort, but from confinement. His chains give weight to his words for the church to be faithful.
The phrase “live a life worthy” literally means in the Greek (peripateo) to “walk” in a manner that matches the gospel. What does that mean?
Over the last 2.5 years, I chose to start working out 4 days per week part of my routine. My initial focus was on three core movements: deadlifting, squatting, and benching. You might notice one thing I am missing: cardio. Well, I hate running.
This year, however, I also realized that if I want to see different results - I am going to have to develop different habits. So what am I doing twice per week? Running.
Paul is writing that our daily steps should reflect the grace we have received. For some of us, that might require us to develop some different habits this year.
What does that worthy walk look like?
Paul names four qualities in Ephesians 4:1-4: humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another in love. These are not flashy virtues. They do not draw applause, but they preserve unity.
And if I could, I would beg you to choose God’s best for you this year. Live a life worthy of the calling you have received. It’s not in what you do or how good you are, but because you have been called by God.
