Faith is the Only Currency that Counts

In God’s Kingdom, faith is the only currency that counts
By: Sheila Sonon

If you’ve ever driven down Three Notch Road and thought, “You know what I need? Absolutely nothing… but I’m gonna look anyway,” then welcome to my life.

Online shopping has become a competitive sport. You should see my Amazon cart. It looks like I’m preparing for a minor Spring apocalypse and a fashion show at the same time. And lately? I’ve been scrolling for a Mustang. Not because my car is old or I need better gas mileage. Just because… I want one. Apparently that’s my financial strategy now.

Meanwhile, I’m also pricing out more ink for my tattoo and eyeing a new purse because I saw a woman and her purse and I have to have it.

Jesus drops this in Gospel of Mark 10:25: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” That one makes me do a Lucille Ball cringe.. He’s not saying money is evil. He’s saying we cling to it—and the stuff it buys— it can’t save us.

Why is it so easy to justify another purchase but so hard to say, “You know what? I’ll give that to Real Life and let God use it”? Why can I finance a want but hesitate on generosity?
So maybe the real flex isn’t what’s in the driveway—it’s hands empty enough for God to fill.  So what can we take? A heart of faith. A life surrendered to Christ. Humility. Childlike trust. Hands empty enough to be lifted in worship and filled with His embrace. Material things aren’t evil. But when they start owning our thoughts, our wallets, our desires—they quietly become our masters or rather false idols. And Jesus gently reminds us: You can’t carry Me and your stuff at the same time.
