Muddy Shoes
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
Yesterday I was wearing a new pair of shoes. Shoes that I had purchased specifically to go with the outfit I was going to wear to my work Christmas party. I was really feeling the cuteness of these shoes. But before it was even time for the Christmas party I stepped onto a patch of grass and my foot sank up to my sock. Thick mud covered the entire side of my shoe.
Soiled.
Dirty.
That’s life, right? We all end up with mud on our shoes at some point. We’ve all done some things that have caused our clothes, and our hearts, to be filthy. The Bible tells us that every single one of us has sinned, we’re all in the same boat.
Not one of us can keep ourselves clean, that’s why we need a Savior. That’s why the angel brought good news of great joy for all people!
I love this scripture from Zechariah 3 where the Lord steps in on behalf of Joshua the high priest:
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! … Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” Zechariah 3:1-4.
When we confess our sins to Jesus, He makes us clean.
This Christmas, if shame tries to shine a spotlight on your filthy garments, remember that your Redeemer has rebuked the accuser, and you are made clean!
