Identity
By: Kaleigh Hoschar
1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Shame is something we try really hard not to experience in life. We don’t like to be wrong, we don’t love being told we are wrong, we don’t particularly enjoy confessing that we were wrong.
But regardless, shame plays a role in this world. Without it, we could do what we want regardless of the outcome.
The key is not to let it become your identity.
When I was seven I broke the Santa cookie plate… ohhh it was so horrible… it was my family’s favorite tradition and there it was shattered on the floor
My face turned red and I immediately wanted to sink into the floor when I saw the look on my mom’s face. I was so ashamed. And for a while, I felt like I was “the girl who ruined Christmas”.
Now this is a tiny little instance and I assure you I have experienced much deeper shame in my life, but it taught me something. That I needed to be a little more careful and move forward.
Our shame shouldn’t halt us… it should propel us forward. So back to 1 John 1:9, where Jesus calls us to confess our sins…
Church, God is faithful and just… He calls us to not hide and to recognize when we mess up!
This Christmas season… leave shame at the door, don’t let it become your identity and celebrate Emmanuel ?
