A Strong Core
By: Nicole Goddard
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Psalm 127:1
Sit ups, planks and burpees - they’re your absolute favorite part of a workout, right? Maybe for some of you super humans it is, but I tend to save these dreaded sets for the very end of my work out. On the days I’m really not feeling them, I’ll tell myself I’m running out of time or that I’ll do extra core sets next time (spoiler alert, I don’t).
Our core is the foundation for almost every move we make. A strong core lends to good balance and spine stability, and a reduced risk of injuries. If it’s arguably one of the most important things to strengthen, why do I avoid it?
Well, because it’s hard. It can hurt – the burn means you’re working, but it doesn’t make it more enjoyable. Repetitive movements can feel boring and it’s also one of the hardest areas to see a visible payoff.
Just like our abs, our home is at the core of everything we do. Every other part of our life flows out of it. A chaotic morning can set the tone for the day, and disagreements can sit with us long after they’re over. Busy schedules can result in rushed conversations and missed moments. It’s the place we are the most comfortable, but it’s also where things can get the messiest. And if we aren’t careful, we can push the hard, important things off to another time or a different season.
Lord, our homes are sacred spaces, little churches with big impact. Help us serve one another unto you and to not skip over the challenging things. Help us strengthen our core so your glory can shine within and beyond our walls!
