What Humbles Us
By: Pastor Todd Crofford
By now you’ve seen the shirt, or the bumper sticker, or the marquis in front of your local church reminding you, “He is the reason for the season.” So true. Without Christ there is no reason to celebrate. Today I want to run a new Christmas one-liner past you:
We are the reason for the season.
Before you storm my house with pitchforks shouting, “Heretic”, hear me out. You and I were the reason Jesus had to come. Jesus became human and then paid the price for sin- because we were sinners indeed. Romans 5:8 reminds us that “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
In the end, being the reason for this season doesn’t puff us up. It rather does the opposite- it humbles us. I was the reason Jesus came and I was the reason he died. Were it not for my sin and yours, his first day in the manger, and his worst day on the cross would not have been necessary. That is humbling. And for that I can only say “Thank You Jesus for Christmas!”
