Surrender
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
“I love it when a plan comes together.”
If, after reading that, you immediately heard the theme music from the tv show “The A-Team” and attributed the quote to the character of Hannibal Smith, then we might be from the same generation.
Even if you didn’t recognize the quote – you probably agree with the sentiment. We love it when we plan for something, and then see those plans come to fruition. It gives us a feeling of being in control (of a situation, a day, an event, or even our own life). It fills us with feelings of success and winning.
Recently, I had a week where it seemed that every plan I made fell apart. From long-term plans to holiday plans, to the plan of the day, every direction that I turned I was reminded that I am not the One in control. I stood in the middle of my office and said out loud, “Ok, Lord. I recognize that you are teaching me about letting go of control.”
Walking out humility requires that we recognize God’s authority and surrender our best plans to Him.
Jesus led us in this by example. Philippians 2:6-7 says that He, “being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
Jesus came to us as a baby who needed to be fed, changed, and carried around, completely dependent on human parents. And He submitted to the Father’s plans for Him all the way to death on the cross.
Will you pray this hard but simple prayer with me? Lord today belongs to you. I surrender my plans to You. Have Your way.
