Repentance Means No Rewind
By: Sheila Sonon

Jeremiah 31:34 says, “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

That verse hits differently right now because I’m walking through something that I know I’ll one day have to answer to God for. I’ve prayed about it—and asked Him not to count it as sin, because I truly believe He’s placed me in this season for a reason. It’s stretching me, humbling me, and teaching me lessons I can’t quite put into words. Even when I don’t understand it, I trust that He’s still working.

Stephen Colbert once said, “Learn to love the thing that I most wish had not happened.” This quote stays with me, because sometimes the very things we wish away are the moments God uses to shape us. I’ve had plenty of those—mistakes, bad decisions—but if God can forgive and forget them, maybe it’s time I stop replaying them too.

But here’s what He’s been reminding me lately: repentance isn’t just saying, “I’m sorry,”—it’s saying, “I’m done.” It’s not about dipping back into the same sin we just cried over. When I hand Him my broken pieces, He doesn’t give them back for me to shatter again—He reshapes them into something that reflects His grace.

Truth is, I wouldn’t be who I am today without those hard lessons—but that doesn’t mean I need to stay stuck in them. God didn’t heal me so I could keep reopening old wounds. So in this season, I’m trusting Him and turning from anything that separates me from His best. True repentance means walking forward differently.

Maybe you’re in that season too—where grace meets conviction. Remember: God knows your heart, your struggle, and your faith.  Our God still has that big eraser. He’s not waiting to condemn you—He’s waiting to redeem you.
