The Perfection of Christ
By Nicole Goddard
Jesus died for me.
Read that again. Jesus died for ME.
On paper that statement is clearly true, backed by evidence in the Bible and many convicting sermons I’ve seen. But in my heart, this statement can still be met with hesitation. How could the son of God, give me – me - such a gift? Wrong decisions, poor character and even denial of my God should surely block me from such forgiveness. And even when I do believe Jesus could give such a gift, I feel the desperation to strive and atone for my sins.
This cycle of feeling unworthy and striving to be worthy can distract us from the crystal-clear truth of the Gospel. One bible study I completed in recent years put it this way:
When God looks at you, he sees the perfection of Christ.
He sees the perfection of Christ in you today, here, now. Not when you’ve earned it. Not when you’ve righted your wrongs. Not when you finally get this Christian life perfectly right.
But rather when you surrender your life to the one who surrendered for you - that is when we are perfected in Christ.
He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation – if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. Colossians 1: 22-23
Holy, without blemish, free from accusation. Perfectly pardoned and reconciled to him through the blood of Jesus Christ. Praise God for that!
