In the In Between
By Nicole Goddard
I have overwhelmingly felt the presence of God in the deep valley seasons of despair, anguish and fear of the giant mountain ahead. I cling to him in my desperation and can see and feel him everywhere, in every detail.
I also have felt him so strongly on the mountain tops. Such gratitude, appreciation and awe of all he is and all that he has done as I have a bird’s eye view of the season below I’ve come out of.
But then there is the in between. The day to day climbing and stumbling, marching along and taking breaks. Nothing overly wrong nor overly wonderful, and these are the days where I am less apt to feel God.
But why? He is always present, that I know. Could it be that I am not as present with him? Distracted by the to do list, a too busy schedule, my personal aspirations, a demanding work week…. Too overwhelmed by the loudness of everyday life that I don’t recognize him in the middle of it?
It reminds me of the story of Simon, after a frustrating night of fishing. Jesus called out from the shore to let down his nets again. “Master, Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll let down the nets.” Luke 5:5 And as the miracle goes, the net filled with so many fish the boat began to sink. It was then that Simon realized he was in the presence of God.
Y’all, Jesus was there the whole time. Right on the shore, watching over Simon Peter and his challenging night of work.
Let’s not wait for the miracle to recognize God’s presence. Take moments to pause and ponder, where did Jesus show up today?
