The Gift of the Holy Spirit
By: Nicole Goddard
My son has recently gotten into superheroes and the Marvels and he often poses the question to us, “Mom, Dad, what kind of super hero power would you want?” In one such conversation, I responded “I’d like to have a photographic memory”. Despite my best efforts to describe how neat that would be, I was met with an unimpressed face in comparison to his own ideas of being able to fly, or shoot laser beams.
I still stand by my suggestion though, as I would love the ability to comb through my memory of pages in the Bible, quickly referencing scripture I’ve highlighted and their surrounding context. I would be like a “human intelligence”, able to store and analyze information in my own brain!
While such a memory would be nice, that is not how God designed me. Knowing it all could also feed into my own self-righteousness. I would be driven to find answers on my own and consumed with my own analysis of the scriptures aiming to prove and declare truths that might not align with God. God never wanted us to do this alone.
In Luke 12:12, Jesus told his disciples “For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said”. Jesus was specifically addressing religious hypocrisy in this passage, one of the enemy’s favorite areas to camp in. Jesus showed his disciples that they would always have the gift of wisdom from the Holy Spirit to discern evil and deception in this world. You and I have that very same spirit within us today. The key is to tap into it.
Pray to the Holy Spirit as you spend time in the scriptures. Ask and you shall receive the wisdom you need to live by God’s truth.
