Is it True?
By: Pastor Chrissy Cooney
As a mom of young adults, I have experienced this thing that I call “mom-imagination.” It’s what happens when I can’t get a hold of my daughters, and my imagination gets the worst of me. My mind gives me worst-case scenarios, and my heart reacts with panic. Both of my daughters have received a text message from me like this, “You have 5 minutes to text back and let me know you are okay before I start driving the roads looking for you.”
Mom-imagination has serious consequences and big emotions. Anger, fear, panic, and anxiety over all the what-if scenarios.
But the “what-ifs” are not truth.
In Philippians 4:8 & 9 Paul tells us, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me – everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”
In this world where information comes quickly and truth is harder than ever to discern, it can be easy to let our imaginations take over. Reacting in fear over what tomorrow will bring can have serious consequences and big emotions.
However, we can always rely on God’s Word to be true, honorable, right, pure, excellent and worthy of praise. We find in His Word how He loves us, He is for us, and His instructions for how to act toward Him and toward each other.
Lord, help us as individuals, and as Your Church, to focus on Truth instead of imaginations. Help us to discern well, to fix our thoughts on Your Word, and to think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
